For more than 50 years traditional breeding has not been beneficial for the health of dogs. Race-specific diseases can be found in almost every breed. The problem, however, is the traditional breeding, which uses only a few award-winning dogs for impregnation. The root of these reoccurring diseases can be tracked back and are results of using only a few dogs, which ultimately leads to inbreeding. Damaged genes and signs of inbreeding spread throughout the race. (You can read more about this in the latest book by Hellmuth Wachtel.)

Health problems of the Kromfohrländer are severe because of the entire breed originates from only two animals (Urpeter and Fifi). Only one dog we know of (Elfe) contributed new genes to the gene pool in 1960. Fact is that today's Kromfohrländer’s inbreeding component is unrealistically high. The coefficient is a problem due to generations of inbreeding, which causes 30% of the Krom-specific-diseases. Now, we have to deal with many genetic diseases and the inbreeding consequences. A few examples are: epilepsy, autoimmune diseases, digital hyperkeratosis, degenerative joint deseases, cataract, thyroid and heart disease and cystinuria. Breeders have more and more difficulties to find a healthy dog for mating.

ProKromfohrländer e. V. wants to try to stop this from happening. In order to prevent inbreeding and successfully cross genetically different and healthy dogs we are going to find a very monitored way to minimize the risk of genetic diseases spreading any further. The scientific monitoring means to accurately select and control mating. The Dansk-Svensk Gårdshund seems particularly suitable for bringing in fresh and healthy genes. In addition, our software will assist us in planning the mating so that we can minimize diseases.

For ProKromfohrländer e.V. it cannot be the goal, to produce as many hybrids, but we have the genetically enhanced Kromfohrländer in mind. As part of our project, we will integrate carefully selected hybrids that have been through three generations and pair them with Kromfohrländer in our Kromfohrländer breeding. This clearly shows that we continue to remain Kromfohrländer breeder and no breeder of "Kromdas".

ProKromfohrländer e.V. wants to breed robust and mentally strong Kromfohrländer. The physical appearance (unless it’s sign of health) is not our first priority.

Therefore, we are also explicitly an association for breeding Kromfohrländer with various fur coats. We like to support the participation of our dogs sports and other competitions. An award-winning and fit dog represents a healthy dog with a strong character.
